Savvy Weight Loss Tip – Eat What You Want

by Martha on October 9, 2011

Eat what you want. It seems so obvious. So easy.

But for many of us this is anything but easy. Especially if we’ve struggled with our weight and been on lots of diets that have overridden our intution.

How many times have you stood in front of the open refrigerator or stared at a menu and thought, What should I have? What should I eat? What do I want?

Figuring out what you want to eat and then eating what you want can be key to losing weight and living the slim and healthy life you desire. But it takes some practice.

Eat What You Want

Eat What You Want

Why Should You Eat What You Want?

So, why am I suggesting that it’s okay to eat what you want when most diet books and weight loss programs forbid such behavior, instead prescribing what you should eat?  When the voice inside your head is telling you it’s “bad” to have that piece of pizza or candy? Here’s why…

  • If you don’t learn to responsibly and joyfully indulge your cravings, you’ll consume lots and lots of calories trying to substitute for what you really want and still not be satisfied. This is not what you want.
  • Once you eat what you want, you can relax and stop. You will have filled your need. (Provided you’re eating a mostly balanced healthy diet, you’re not letting yourself get too hungry and you’re not living on lots of processed food – which will totally mess with your hunger signals and cause you to overeat!)
  • When you eat what you really want, you’ll most likely be happier and end up slimmer because you are not denying yourself. You are not punishing and depriving yourself.  You’re not stressing yourself out. You are satisfying your true desires.

I believe you can eat what you want, provided the portion size is reasonable. (This isn’t permission to eat with reckless abandon. If you’re eating sweet, fried and high calorie foods in large quantities every day that’s a whole other story!)

So, while you can eat what you want,  you just can’t eat lots of what you want all the time if you want to be slim & healthy! And when you eat slower and take the time to really savor what you eat, you’ll discover that you don’t need a whole lot to be satisfied.

How to Figure Out What You Want to Eat

So, before diving into that plate of several day-old cookies staring at you from the lunchroom counter  or mindlessly munching your way through that bag of slightly stale potato chips, pause and ask yourself, “Do I really want to eat this?” You may discover that you’re just eating it because it’s there or because you’re bored or because it’s a habit to have a cookie every afternoon.

Pause, take a deep breath and think about it. Ask yourself, “Is this what I really want?  Is there something that I would rather have?” Perhaps, a handful of dark chocolate covered almonds? Or a fresh-from-the-oven cookie, even if it means holding out until you have time to bake the cookie dough you have stashed in the freezer?

Sometimes, what you really want to eat will take a little effort, but it’s usually worth the investment of time and/or energy required to get it.

Enjoy and Indulge without Guilt

Once you have figured out what you want. Eat it without guilt. Savor it. After all, eating is one of life’s great pleasures. Delicious food isn’t bad, wrong, evil or sinful. Let go of the regret. Lighten up. Have what you want and don’t beat yourself up about it. If you aren’t getting pleasure from your indulgences, what’s the point?

Remember, it’s all about balancing your love of delicious food and desire to be slim & healthy!

Want a tasty easy recipe for losing weight? Trade in your high calorie condiments and sauces for this easy tasty skinny Pico de Gallo – a simple fresh tomato salsa – that goes with everything.

Using salsas – either jarred or fresh like this Pico de Gallo – is one of my favorite ways to decrease calories while bumping up the flavor and nutrition of any dish. It’s naturally low fat, low in calories and full of good for you vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. There are very few calories in pico de gallo – about 10 in 2 tablespoons (75% less than in ketchup).

You can use salsa in so many ways. It makes a great topping for grilled chicken, fish, shrimp or vegetables. Cooked green beans topped with salsa is one of my favorite easy healthy low-fat, low-calorie, zero points snacks. It’s also great stirred into cottage cheese and makes a tasty veggie dip.

And I’m not alone – I read that first female winner of the Biggest Loser - Ali Vincent - also loves to spice up her foods with fresh salsa.

Pico de Gallo - Fresh Tomato Salsa

Pico de Gallo - Fresh Tomato Salsa

You can find perfectly fine jarred salsa at the grocery store and doctor it up a bit, which is what I do most of the time. The only downside to jarred salsa is that it can be high in sodium.

But when you can get fresh tomatoes – it’s definitely worth making fresh Pico de Gallo tomato salsa at home. The nice thing about salsa is that you don’t have to be exact. You can be creative and use what you have available. You might want to try adding black beans, chopped bell peppers, chopped avocado, roasted corn or fresh fruit like pineapple.

Fresh Pico de Gallo Recipe

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: None
Standing Time: at least 30 minutes
Yield: about 2 cups

This fresh pico de gallo is a delicious fresh and easy low calorie condiment that goes well with just about everything. You can serve it with tacos, tostadas or quesadillas of course. It’s also great as a topping for grilled fish, chicken and shrimp – as well as omelets, frittatas and scrambled eggs.

For a smoother, less chunky salsa, put everything in a blender or food processor and pulse a few times until it’s almost smooth, but still a little chunky.

Ingredients

4 – 6 ripe plum tomatoes, chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion (red or white)
1 jalapeno chile, stemmed, seeded, and finely chopped
½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
1/2 teaspoon fresh black pepper or to taste

Preparation Instructions

In a medium-size mixing bowl combine all ingredients until well blended. For a smoother salsa, you can put everything in the blender or food processor and pulse a few times until it’s almost smooth, but still a little chunky.

Cover and let stand for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors blend. Give it a stir, taste and adjust the seasonings before serving.

This fresh tomato salsa recipe can be stored covered in the refrigerator and is best if used within 1 to 2 days of making.

I’m a big fan of yoga for losing weight. Why? Because since I began doing yoga, I’ve had an easier time losing weight and keeping it off.

I’ve heard a lot a people ask, “Does yoga help you lose weight?” And a lot of people don’t believe it. They’re convinced that yoga isn’t a vigorous enough aerobic workout for weight loss. I think they’re wrong. (The best exercise program for weight loss probably isn’t what you think.)

According to an article on Yoga to Lose Weight in Women’s Health, “Research published in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine found that people who practiced yoga regularly for 4 years or more actually gained less weight as they got older. What’s more, overweight individuals who practiced yoga for 4 years or more managed to lose weight over a 10-year period.”

Do Yoga to Lose Weight

There are lots of reasons that yoga helps with weight loss that go far beyond the physical practice itself. After more than a decade of doing yoga, I’m living proof. In fact, calories burned alone can’t account for the the power of this ancient practice.

Yoga helps with all aspects of the weight issue–physical, mental, and emotional.

The same techniques you learn in yoga to stay focused and breathe through poses during yoga class can be used when you’re in the kitchen or a restaurant.

And because, yoga practitioners feel more in tune with their bodies, they’re better able to pay attention to it’s signals — including hunger and satisfaction.

When you’re more aware of why you’re eating or not eating, you can begin to lose weight almost without effort.

Here are 7 specific ways Yoga helps for losing weight…

Have you ever wondered why diet plans for weight loss are so popular even though they rarely work? Right now WebMD has reviews for more than 90 popular diets - so we can’t blame weight gain and obesity on a lack of information.

Doesn’t it seem crazy that we (including me) are willing to give more than $40B of our hard earned money to the diet and weight loss industry each year when the statistics show that the pounds lost will be back before we know what hit us?

Did you know that results of a 2006 study reported in The New England Journal of Medicine, showed that most people who participate in diet plans for weight-loss “regain about one-third of the weight lost during the next year and are typically back to baseline in three to five years?” That’s certainly been my experience.

Why is everyone so enamored of the latest diet fad – be it low fat, low carb, high protein, raw food or HCG? Right now some of the best selling books at Amazon are Diet Books – including  The 17 Day Diet: A Doctor’s Plan Designed for Rapid Results and  The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever.

Popular Diet Books

How many diet books and plans for weight loss have you been sucked into during your life?

It would make me sick to see all the money that I’ve wasted on diets – diet books books, weight loss programs, pills, fat burning supplements, meal replacement shakes and bars and fat burning teas – through the decades stacked up right here before me.

I wish I knew then what I know now. I would have invested the money in things to make me happy and bring me pleasure instead of complicated ways to punish myself. (But if I can help just one women stop the diet insanity with what I write here – I’ll consider it worth it.)

So, here’s my take on why diet plans are so popular…
